The Nevada Northern Railway 2005 Centennial Coin commemorates the building of the railroad from Cobre to Ely. Construction stated in September 1905 and it took the crews a little longer than a year to reach Ely. The Copper Spike Ceremony was September 29, 1906. The front of the coin shows the men building the track. On the reverse is the Centennial logo of the railroad. This is the first coin in a series of three that will celebrate the construction of the Nevada Northern Railway.

This very special Centennial Coin is being struck on the Coin Press Number 1 located in the Nevada State Museum in Carson City, Nevada. On February 11, 1970, this press struck the first coin bearing the soon-to-be-famous CC mintmark, a Seated Liberty Dollar. For nearly a quarter of a century it was used to strike the larger denomination pieces produced during the years the mint actually produced coins. Today, housed in what was the U.S. Mint in Carson City, the press is used to strike commemorative coins such as the Centennial Coin of the Nevada Northern Railway Museum.

Obverse
The artwork of the men building the Nevada Northern is from a mural done by Chris Kreider for the Ely Renaissance Society. The mural is located on the First National Bank building in Ely. Today, there are nearly twenty murals and sculptures spread throughout the town and Ely has truly become a Renaissance community due to the efforts of the society. Artists have been commissioned locally and from all over the world. Many can be seen on a walking tour of Ely's downtown area and the Ely Renaissance Society has produced a brochure and descriptive map for each location. You can get a copy at the White Pine Chamber of Commerce.

Reverse
On September 11, 1905 work started on the building of the Nevada Northern Railway from Cobre (Spanish for copper), 140 miles north of East Ely. In a little over a year, the rails would reach East Ely. For seventy-nine years, the railroad served the copper mines. In 1984, the 56-acre railroad complex with the historic equipment was donated to the City of Ely for a museum. Today, steam powered trains still operate on the Nevada Northern Railway continuing a tradition that stretches back 100 years. The museum is a step back in time when steam locomotives ruled the rails and the demand for copper was insatiable.

The limited edition Nevada Northern Railway Centennial Coin will bear the historic CC mintmark, be the size of a silver dollar and will be produced in copper, silver, and gold plated silver.

Copper     For 77 years, the Nevada Northern Railway hauled copper ore to the smelter and then hauled the refined copper to the interchange with the transcontinental railroad. It is then very appropriate that individuals who contribute at the Active and Family level receive a 100% pure copper Centennial Coin.

Silver     It wasn't just copper than was mined in Ely, but silver too. In fact, so much silver has been mined in Nevada that the nickname of the state is "The Silver State." Individuals who contribute at the Centennial level will receive the Limited Edition Centennial Coin in .999 silver with the famous CC mintmark. This unique keepsake combines the historic appeal of an exclusive commemorative coin and supports the continuation of the steam locomotive program at the Centennial of the Railroad.

Gold     Mention the word and people will come from all over. Until 1849, there weren't very many people in Nevada. Then gold was discovered in California and the rush was on. In 1869, gold was discovered in White Pine County a short distance away from Ely. Just like its rarity in nature, there will be only 100 of the 24 karat Gold Plated Silver Centennial Coins struck. These coins are reserved for individuals who contribute at the Patron and Life levels. This exclusive very limited edition heavy gold plated Centennial Coin in .999 silver will bear the famous CC mintmark. This elite extraordinary coin will be treasured for years. The golden glow of the coin will remind you of the glow in the firebox and you contribution in keeping the steam locomotives hot.
