General
Supervises
and works with helpers in performing maintenance, construction, inspection
and repairs on 30 miles of track for the daily operations of a full-service
tourist railroad. Secondary duties may include assisting the mechanical
department on an as-needed basis.
Supervision received
Employee will work
under the general supervision of the Executive Director.
Essential Functions
The
employee will be responsible for the maintenance of the museum's track.
The employee will perform and supervise others in the maintenance, construction,
inspection and repairs of the museum's track and structures. Routine
rail maintenance duties include but are not limited to: removes and
replaces rail, ties, track fastenings and turnout fittings; repairs,
adjusts, cleans, and lubricates switches, frogs, road crossings and
appliances, signs and drainage structures; surface and lines track;
cuts, drills, grinds and welds rail and track components; operates all
Museum vehicles, tools, and equipment required in the normal performance
of their duties; walks track during inspection; looks for rail defects.
Duties will include driving spikes, replacing ties, replacing rails,
tamping, placing ballast, track inspection and any other duties as necessary
to keep the railroad functioning. Employee will be required to operate
specialized vehicles and maintenance equipment. This is heavy manual
work requiring a broad knowledge of railroad track maintenance, tools
and equipment with exposure to all weather conditions and hazards associated
with an operating railroad. Additional duties will include maintaining
the equipment, buildings, and grounds.
Marginal Functions
On
an as needed basis, the Roadmaster will work with the other maintenance
staff and officers to carry out projects. The employee will fulfill
special assignments as directed by the Chief Mechanical Officer or the
Deputy Mechanical Officer.
Minimum Qualifications
1. A minimum of
three years experience as a Rail Laborer or one year as a Track Foreman.
2. Education and
Experience: Graduation from high school or GED.
3. Must have a valid
drivers license and clean driving record.
4. Knowledge, Skills
and Abilities:
Familiar with
modern construction methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment;
basic drafting techniques, able to understand blueprints and being
able to use most hand tools and power tools. Must be able to perform
simple arithmetic calculations, read and understand instruction books.
The employee must be willing to learn the operation of specialized
vehicles and maintenance equipment.
Ability to learn;
interpret codes accurately and effectively; communicate effectively
verbally and in writing; read and interpret plans and specifications;
work independently to accomplish various projects and meet deadlines;
develop and maintain effective working relationships with, managers,
co-workers and the public.
Perform above
duties efficiently and in compliance with all safety rules and regulations.
Special Qualifications
The candidate
must have extensive hands on experience in track maintenance. The
ability to operate ballast regulators and tampers is a plus.

Work Environment
Tasks require
a variety of physical activities periodically involving muscular strain.
Physical activity and demands are frequently related to walking, standing,
stooping, climbing, sitting, lifting and reaching. Talking, hearing,
and seeing is essential to job performance. Mental application utilizes
memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and
creative problem solving common to most job functions. Periodic local
travel required in course of performing portions of job functions.
Employee may be exposed to seasonal weather extremes, various chemicals,
solvents and fuels in the performance of day-to-day tasks.
Salary
This is salaried
position. Salary is dependant on experience. Workweek will consist
of working most weekends and holidays during the operating season.
The workday can vary from 3:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
